The key points learned in this module were:
- Patient-athletes may have a legitimate medical need that requires the use of a prohibited substance/method in sport. A TUE application should be submitted and an approval of that TUE is required prior to use of the substance/method in a sport context.
- Open communication & sufficient understanding of the Prohibited List and WADA TUE Physician Guidelines by both the physician and patient-athlete is critical in applying for a TUE.
- During a medical emergency, there are certain steps which must be followed after the administration of a prohibited substance/method in order to apply for a TUE.
- Use USADA resources such as GlobalDRO and the Drug Reference hotline to assist athletes in the TUE application process.
