Have you recommended an athlete choose a supplement to replace something deficient in their diet or is it purely to try and enhance performance?
There remains considerable scientific debate regarding the benefit of dietary supplement use. In some cases, supplements may provide a medically justified replacement to the lack of key nutritional requirements. But, the potential negative consequences of taking supplements may outweigh the potential positive consequences. You play an important role in helping athletes navigate this complex arena.
Unfortunately for athletes, in most cases, the reasons not to take dietary supplements are never presented, and the validity of “pro-supplement” perceptions do not get challenged. Athletes often skip the step of deciding whether or not taking dietary supplements is necessary and buy into assumptions that are present in the athletic community. Together with the athletes you treat, challenge the reasons to use supplements.
