Circumstances may arise where a patient-athlete requires emergency medical treatment with a prohibited substance/method. In those cases, the patient-athlete should never be denied critical care with a necessary treatment and should consider their health first and athletic competition second.
Patient-athletes should submit an Emergency TUE with all available medical information as soon as reasonable after the treatment. In many cases, a retroactive TUE will be considered under ISTUE criteria 4.1a for emergency or urgent medical treatment immediately following an event and/or sample collection.
As the medical provider, you should formally document (clinical note) the circumstances surrounding the medical emergency, assessment and decisions to include differential diagnosis and medication prescription in order for an Emergency TUE to be considered by the TUEC.
