Mountain Pose combines a yoga pose with visual imagery. Standing like a mountain provides physiological stability whereas the imagery shifts focus from stressful thoughts and feelings to a relaxing scene.
Ask the child to stand up straight, pressing the feet into the ground hip-distance apart, arms and hands relaxed, crown of the head up, chin parallel to the ground. Tell the child to imagine that they are a mountain and ask them to describe their mountain’s characteristics: height, strength, resilience, movement, sounds, sights, etc.
After the exercise, ask the child how they feel.
Practice standing in Mountain Pose for 4–5 minutes and imagine you are a mountain. What do you see? What do you hear? What do you feel? What do you smell? How do you feel once the exercise is over?
