Autism.18b Behavior Support Strategies-Think
Remain calm and ask yourself:
Is the behavior causing problems? If not, you can ignore it.
Is it trying to communicate something? If so, what?
A,B,C’s of Behavior: Antecedents, Behaviors, Consequences
- Antecedents: What comes directly before the behavior (i.e. the demand or trigger)?
- Behaviors: What does the behavior look like? What is the function of the behavior?
- Consequences: What comes directly after the behavior? What may be maintaining the behavior? Is escape-motivated behavior working? Identify how you can stop making the inappropriate behavior successful
Identify Triggers: Address the root cause or trigger by understanding the four functions of behavior: Sensory needs, escape strategies, seeking attention, desire for tangibles
Rule out medical problems associated with behavior changes (pain, infection, constipation, seizures, etc.)
